Personality:
Like all elves, Legolas has an appreciation and understanding of nature that the other races of Middle Earth lack. Ear against the earth, he can hear the hoard of Orcs that stole away Merry and Pippin. While in Fangorn, he expresses how the forest makes him feel young once again and how he’d like to return one day.
He is loyal to his companions in the Fellowship, growing angry at Aragorn for worrying those that continued on with Rohan’s people to Helm’s Deep and even more so as he watched young boys being fitted for armor. This shows that he holds all life in high regards and loathes the pointless waste of life. He is kind to those around him and even forms a tight friendship with Gimli, a dwarf, an apparently exceedingly rare occurrence in Middle Earth. As old as he is, during the War of the Ring (which is about 2,932 years at that time), he had an egotistical habit of referring to those around him, in the fellowship, as children, with the exception of Gandalf who is about 51,000 years older than him.
Despite the dire times, Legolas showed an amount of cheerfulness that one normally wouldn’t express during times of war. This can either be attributed to elven sturdiness and long life, or it could be his way of coping with all the death around him. Often, during battles, he and Gimli challenge each other to see who can kill the most orcs. Legolas usually wins.
He is also brave, later joining Aragorn through the Path of the Dead without hesitation and with full knowledge that it was necessary. Not only brave but he is extremely faithful, and his tracking skills are not wasted when trying to rescue Merry and Pippin from the Orcs to Isengard.
Legolas isn’t as well traveled as the rest of his companions seem to be, due to the fact that elves typically remain in the woods they call home and even comments that Aragorn has traveled more and farther than he ever has. This could also be attributed to the fact that he is a prince, son to King Thranduil of the Sindarin elves and royalty usually has more restrictions placed on them.
Like all elves, he has an appreciation for all types of beauty and is moved when Gimli tells him about the Glittering Caves. He also appeared to appreciate the beauty of Lothlorien, despite the fact that the entire fellowship was currently mourning the loss of Gandalf and appears to be fascinated by Fangorn Forest later.
And finally, Legolas can hold his liquor with the best of them. In a drinking game against Gimli, Legolas drank over ten mugs/pints of ale and barely suffered from tingling fingers while Gimli passed out in a cross-eyed, drunken stupor.
